For their second release, guitarist Eric Hofbauer, saxophonist Jared Sims, and pianist Tyson Rogers looked to make a deeper connection to the jazz tradition. “We wanted to expand what we do and connect it to the bigger picture—to the history of jazz,” says Hofbauer. “The idea of an intergenerational connection—a connection to the great lineage of jazz—underscores the whole project.” The Blueprint Project, with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Matt Wilson joining the trio, makes some deep connections indeed. The quintet quickly establishes a group dynamic in which each player maintains their individual integrity while contributing to a collective whole. Their ability to listen to one another, leave room for others to contribute to the development of a piece, and keep a melodic thread running through their solos unifies each piece. In jazz, the blueprint on which every new generation builds is created by the musicians who precede them. On The Blueprint Project, three generations of musical architects all work off the same plan, constructing innovative music on a solid foundation of tradition.
